Esther May Campbell Anything Moving films and photo exhibition

Enter into the magical underworld of Clearwell Caves, the very earth beneath our feet, to experience a series of three films created over a year by artist Esther May Campbell and young people from the Bristol-based Kitchen Table Photo club.

In the woods they told stories of human, spirit and animal-kin. The kids played make-believe and tied camera traps to trees and rocks and waited like Foxes, watching with Eagle Eyes and listening with Deer Ears. They recorded sounds of wind and trees and laughter. Spending months foraging footage of badger, heron, buzzard, deer, fox as well as kids having wild rumpuses, eating, relaxing. After a year, Esther collaged their findings into 3 audio visual pieces that shatter the boundaries between worlds.

‘Anything Moving is so good, so un-bossy in its artistry, so moving as portraits of children (and therefore portraits of all of us). Really I can’t think of any other account of childhood that doesn’t feel patronising by comparison. What it offers is profound, abundant and not quite graspable. I love it’. Alice Oswald, poet and gardener

These films will be screened inside the caves themselves which are a tourist attraction – please see the Clearwell Caves website for ticket prices and opening times.

Wye Wonderment photos

Alongside the films, we will also exhibit a series of photos made by young people in the Wye Valley with Esther throughout autumn 2023 in the Clearwell Caves cafe.
